| ca. late nineteenth early twentieth century 52 1/2" x 39", 133 cm x 99 cm The five white kanji, or Chinese characters, which dominate this indigo dyed cotton noren, or door covering are done using a paste resist technique: rice paste is applied to the undyed cotton and the paste is rendered to resemble kanji. The cloth is dyed in indigo and the pasted areas resist the indigo, giving us these beautiful calligraphic forms. Fabulously weathered and faded due to exposure to the elements--and filled with soul--this three panel noren is highly collectible. | |||||||||||
