| ca. early to mid twentieth century 33" x 46", 84 cm x 117 cm This is a wonderfully rural piece, a gorgeous collage of mainly home spun, hand woven cotton textiles, the botton being very heavily over-patched. Aside from the visual beauty of this sarong-like under kimono--a kind of 'half-slip'--is that it comes to us from a collection of Japanese textiles collected in the early 1990s, the collector was a textile researcher. Therfore we know this koshimaki was made in Akita Prefecture and dates to approximately WWII: this kind of specific information on any one piece of anonymous folk craft is rare to know. This garment, although pieced together at a later date, is sewn of cloth woven at least 50-75 years prior to its assembly. Note the wonderful and heavily woven cotton fabrics, which are applied in layers. Front and back of this piece is shown to give a view onto these handwoven cotton textiles, which are very emblematic of rural, old Japan. | ||||||||||||||
