| ca. mid to late nineteent century 10 1/2" x 15", 26.5 cm x 38 cm This intensely pieced beauty owes its allure to the gorgeous Edo period (1603-1867) silks--all dyed using botanical dyes--that are expertly stitched together on a diagonal. Pay special attention to very small runs of pieced cloth that are used to fill one small square area: quite amazingly detailed stitchery went into this silk-lined, drawstsring bag. The cloth of course is recycled from garments. This bag, being a showy piece, was most likely used to bring offering--usually rice--to temple festivals, thus, bags of this sort are generally referred to as komebukuro, or rice bags. Please pour over the detail photos and drink in the beautiful cloth fragments that are joined together to make this bag--note the lovely length of shibori silk. | |||||||||||||||
