| ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century 4 1/2" x 15 1/2", 11 cm x 39.5 cm What a wonderful find. This is a farmer's shin guard: it would have been wrapped around the lower leg for protection from the harsh underbrush. In this case, this particular beauty is heavily embellished with a beauiful, repeat pattern of the persimmon flower motif, a common one in Japan. What's nice about this is that the sashiko stitching is done in a thick, blue cotton thread against a ground of hand woven white cotton, giving a beautiful effect. The sashiko stitching is very carefully applied and this is a great treasure from old Japan. | ||||||||
