| ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century 78" x 12 1/2", 198 cm x 32 cm This extremely handsome nobori: it is a banner that would have been flown outside of someone's home on a ceremonial occasion; this banner, or nobori, may once have been taller and may have been cut down to this size. Traditionally, banners are flown for various purposes in Japan: sometimes at Shinto shrines and always at Boys' Day which falls on 5 May of each year: for Boys' Day, banners are flown to celebrate masculine virture and to honor the boys in the family: often these Boys' Day banners depict heroic subjects like famous samurai or historical figures. This nobori does not show the typical motives that are associated with Boys' Day. It most likely would have been used to celebrate a great fishing catch, so the crashing wave motif is indicative of the fickle sea and its relation to man. The large, graphic mon, or family crest shown on the top of the banner is a stylized horse bit hardware, however this cross form was sometimes used as surreptitious communication between Japanese Christians during the time Christianity was outlawed in Japan. A gorgeous, marvelous thing and highly recommended. | |||||||||||
