By far, the greatest number of doll quilts are pieced. This Crossed Tulips example is unusual for the primary pattern is appliqued. The tiny, pieced sawtooth border offsets the bold pattern very well. It is nicely quilted and measures 18" x 22". Condition is good but not perfect. There is some wear to the binding but the body of the quilt is strong. From Pennsylvania; circa 1870.

A vibrant kaleidoscopic background sets off this charming reclining dog hooked rug. The dog has whimsical yellow paws; ears and nose adding to his unique charm. This Victory Star Crib Quilt also goes by the pattern names of Hands All Around and Yankee Pride. Regardless of the name, a Lemoyne Star sits at the center of eight half stars. The geometry of the pattern is nicely balanced by a swag border. Several of the brick colored lobes of the border show some "popping" but it is not throughout.
Nicely quilted. Measures 36" x 46". Made circa 1870; Pennsylvania origin.

This elegant white trapunto was made originally as a dresser scarf but would serve equally well as a wall hanging. The grape; leaf and heart motifs are sewn with the tiniest stitches imaginable. This elaborately worked whitework quilt is one of the most elegant and elaborate that I have seen. In the center is written the name Ada Chew within a star. Surrounding that are various wreaths and garlands. The outer corners are done with trapunto cornucopias brimming with flowers. The inner corners are stuffed work pineapples, the symbol for friendship and hospitality. The ground areas not done with trapunto are worked with the most dense stipple quilting that is possible.
