This elaborately worked whitework quilt is one of the most elegant and elaborate that I have seen. In the center is written the name Ada Chew within a star. Surrounding that are various wreaths and garlands. The outer corners are done with trapunto cornucopias brimming with flowers. The inner corners are stuffed work pineapples, the symbol for friendship and hospitality. The ground areas not done with trapunto are worked with the most dense stipple quilting that is possible. Soft toned floral print fabric combined with large open spaces makes for a gentle quilt in this Lattice pattern. The white blocks are quilted with sunbursts and pinwheels. An inked signature says M.L. Himbolt. Measurements are 83" x 86". Condition is good but not perfect. There are several areas of slight weakness to the fabric. It has been professionally laundered. Dates to the 1860's.
This Double Hourglass crib quilt is more complex than it may first appear. The white triangles are set in four indigo diamond shaped blocks. The sawtooth border and four patch corner blocks are a good juxtaposition to the indigo ground. Each corner has an embroidered initial and the date 1900. Measures 28 1/2" square; very good condition. Pennsylvania origin.
It is difficult to imagine a more lush garden of chintz fabrics, exquisitely placed together. The maker cleverly created an open diamond in the center frame which is the perfect transition from the straight lines of the outer borders to the circles in the center. It has been professionally laundered and is in excellent condition. There are some water marks on the back that do not show on the front. The quilting in the center is in a clamshell pattern, relating to the circular appliqued motifs. M ...click for details
This Mennonite Diamond in a Square quilt has the unusual addition of a square within the diamond!
It is made of wools that are in very good condition but do have a few tiny holes, as shown in thumbnail detail. The use of several different red wools in the sawtooth border make for a nice variation. The maker was clearly influenced by the traditional Lancaster Amish Diamond in a Square pattern. The execution of this quilt is more crude but in some ways, more graphically effective because of the u ...click for details
Unusually large pin cushion done as a Pineapple Log Cabin. It measures 4 1/2" a 8" and 3" tall. It is made of fine wool and is probably filled with sawdust. Excellent condition; Pennsylvania origin. Made in the 1870's.
This elegant Lone Star Quilt was done with the utmost care and precision. It is quilted with tiny stitches in a variety of floral patterns. The selection of fabrics and the way they were placed is exquisite. The center of the star is repeated in the clusters of flowers around it. These fabrics were cut from the same material used for the outer border. The quilt is in excellent condition. The colors have mellowed consistently. It can be washed to create a brighter background but that does not see ...click for details
This wonderful Thousand Pyramids crib quilt uses lights and darks so as to give the effect of a stained glass window. It is made of a beautiful variety of late 19th century printed fabrics set off by a solid red border with cable quilting. It is in excellent, unwashed condition. There is a slight smudge about the size of a dime in the outer border but no other condition flaws. Measurements are 30" square; Lancaster County, Pennsylvania origin. Made circa 1880.
This quilt of blocks of triangles most closely approximates the patterns known as Wild Geese or Winged Squares. It is an ideal shade of cornflower blue. It is well quilted with floral wreaths in the white diamonds and concentric half circles in the white half blocks inside the border. Measurements are 66" square; excellent condition. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1920.
