This original quilt pattern resembling Celtic Knots is outstanding in both its conception and implementation. Curves and points are the two most difficult features to execute and this quilt consists solely of the two of them. Quilting patterns in the white blocks repeat the knot design. Measures 98" square. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1870.
Anyone who thinks of the Amish as drab has not seen this unique quilt. It is imaginative and exuberant. Medium/ lightweight wools are heavily embroidered to create an extraordinary surface. The circles are centered with finely made compasses indicative of the maker's attention to detail while also creating a bold overall image. Half circles wonderfully contain this bold pattern. The color combinations are as unusual as are the numerous patterns. This was certainly made by an Amish woman who ...click for details
Wonderfully crisp looking design of Baskets surrounded by a sawtooth border. The sawtooth actually repeats the same triangles as within the baskets; they are just turned in a different direction. One of the special features of this perky quilt is that the maker exactly duplicated the pieced baskets in the quilted patterns. Freshly laundered; excellent condition. Measures 68" x 80": Eastern Shore of Maryland origin.
This Maple Leaf Quilt is exceptional for a number of reasons, most obvious of which is the size. It measures 108" wide x 100" long. It is signed Miriam Lippincott Mansfield, NJ 1848. Miriam clearly made this quilt for her hope chest. She was born in 1830 and married Henry Warrington Roberts in 1860. In addition, the quilt has an outstanding group of early 19th century red printed fabrics, all in excellent condition. The quilt has not been washed. Several different white fabrics were u ...click for details
Two features make this classic Baskets Quilt a bit out of the ordinary.
Usually, a Basket filled with triangles would be that way throughout. This example includes a solid band just above the base of triangles. In addition, the burnt orange color is most unusual. It is a bit more toned down than appears on my monitor. The zig zag border is actually made of the same triangles as used in the Baskets. Nicely quilted with several geometric patterns. Measures 72" long x 78" wide; circa 18 ...click for details
It is difficult to imagine a quilt that screams of its Lancaster County, Pennsylvania origin more than this Baskets example. The calico fabrics are typical of that area as is the pieced Bars backing. Fabrics are symmetrically placed indicating the care and precision taken by the maker in creating this striking quilt. It is in as pristine condition as the day it was made in the 1880's. Measures 80" x 84".
This striking Crazy Quilt looks like an aerial landscape. The hot pink inner border is surprisingly contemporary looking (although completely original) for a 19th century quilt. It is in pristine condition and would work well in either a traditional or contemporary setting. Measures 72" x 74". Made of cotton sateen, silk and satin.
This traditional Irish Chain quilt is more "dressy" than one often sees because of the elegant glazed chintz border. It measures a generous 82" x 96" as one would typically find in the mid 19th century when this was made. It is in unwashed condition. There is some light discoloration that would most likely be removed with a wash. The entire back is a glorious fabric shown in the last thumbnail. It would make an equally beautiful whole cloth quilt when used on the reverse.
Lovely country quilt of Swallow in the Window in excellent condition. The striped fabric (which is more denimy blue than the gray it appears on my monitor) nicely continues the solid red used throughout the quilt. Measures 70" x 78": circa 1890.
This Windmill Blades Log Cabin Quilt has lots of swirling movement as the name implies. The dark centers are made of a combination of blue and brown fabrics giving added richness to this vibrant pattern. The front is almost all wool with velvet centers to each block. The yellow fabric and backing are cotton. Excellent condition; circa 1890. Measures 72" x 86".
