Two exquisite roll-up needle "Huswif" (housewife) cases made of exquisite 1820 - 1830 fabrics. Smaller one measures 12 1/2" long and 3 1/2" wide. Pristine condition on front and back. Fabrics I believe all date to the 1820's.
Larger example is 17" long and 5" wide. Hand loomed tape binding; a piece of wide silk ribbon remains in one of the pockets. Bound with handloomed tape. Front is pristine; some discoloration on the back visible in thumbnail photos. Fabrics ...click for details
Outstandingly strong graphic created by both the pattern of this Carpenter's Wheel (aka Octagonal Star; Eccentric Star) as well as the use of solid black and white fabrics. Alternating black and white in each block further contributes to the powerful impact. Hourglass formations created in the off blocks adds additional interest. Professionally laundered; excellent condition. Summer weight/ no batting. Missouri origin. Measures 62" x 78".
Streamlined, perhaps original pattern that I have termed Bricks, for want of a more proper name. Wonderfully abstract in its simplicity. Nicely quilted including concentric half circles in the border that are a terrific contrast to the geometry of the rest of the quilting as well as the pieced pattern. Measures 40" x 55"; excellent condition. Maryland origin.
Very pleasing, unlikely combination of colors used to make this equally unlikely combination of quilt patterns - Irish Chain with Stars. Thumbnail photos clearly show how the placement of fabrics creates more patterns than a traditional Irish Chain.
Professionally laundered; excellent condition. Pennsylvania origin; circa 1910 with some late 19th century fabrics. Measures 73" x 88".
This unusual quilt is closest to the Dove in the Window or Goose Tracks patterns. Well made with a terrific, whimsical swag border. The soft blue calico background beautifully sets off the pink and green. Professionally laundered; excellent condition. Measures 82" x 88"; circa 1860. Pennsylvania origin.
Dramatic Lone Star quilt (aka Star of Bethlehem) with the most unusual of background fabrics. It's a print I've never seen before that has the profile of a woman. It may be earlier than the calicoes of the star. Unwashed condition. Some oxidation to the solid orange fabric. Measures 100" square, unusually large for the 1870's when it was made. Pennsylvania origin.
Wonderful checkerboard type geometric pattern hooked rug. Great use of lights, darks and variegation. Beautiful shade of blue not often seen in such generous amounts in this type of rug. Measures 28" x 42 1/2": wool. Circa 1920 with an earlier checked cotton backing. Excellent condition.
Crisp and unwashed Attic Window pattern quilt (aka Double Hour Glass and Road to California). Wonderful combination of turn of the century checks, plaids and solid color fabrics. Cable quilted border clearly delineated by pencil markings. A terrific country quilt. Measures 82" x 85"; Pennsylvania origin. Circa 1900.
Fabulous abstracted version of a House Hooked Rug. The entrance to the path looks like an upside down heart. Perhaps it was a sweethearts cottage? Great borders make the entire composition varied, unusual end eye catching. Professionally cleaned and restored on edges. Mounted on stretcher that measures 27" x 40". Primarily cotton with some wool. Circa 1900; Maryland origin.
Rich, early fabrics are beautifully combined in this Lone Star (aka Star of Bethlehem) quilt. Very well quilted; professionally laundered. Unusual construction in that each of the small stars is set in a block that is appliqued on the white ground fabric. The small stars seem to swirl around the cental one. Excellent condition; circa 1870. Berks County, Pennsylvania. Measures 64" x 78".
