Album Patch Friendship Quilt with signatures and locations in New York State. Each block has an inked name. Most of the locations appear to say Unadilla but also include Norwich and Butternut. Each signature is accompanied by a quilted heart. Excellent, unwashed condition. Glorious combination of richly colored and patterned fabrics. Circa 1850. Measures 77" x 89".
This Sawtooth pattern quilt is the earliest and most unusual charm quilt (no fabric is repeated) that I have seen. Because of the small scale blocks, it also has more variety of fabrics than most charm quilts. Each block quilted with a four petal type flower. Pristine, unwashed condition. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania origin. Circa 1870; measures 79" x 85".
This pink and green Diamonds in Squares quilt is the color palette of the gemstone, watermelon tourmaline. Striped and checked fabrics add to the complexity of the quilt. Perfectly balanced with half squares creating a border. Excellent condition; wool with cotton backing. Tied rather than quilted. Measures 68" x 72"; circa 1920.
Pieced Center Medallion Quilt made of richly colored light weight wools. Unusual format in that the Central Medallion was popular in the first half of the 19th century but had largely gone out of fashion at the time this was made. Quilted but seems to have originally been tied as well as indicated by regularly placed small dark circles.
Circa 1870. Probably New England origin. Measures 68" x 78".
Simultaneously very simple and sophisticated Lattice pattern quilt. Rust calico diagonals (two different prints) are highlighted by green calico intersections. Quilted in squares that are 3/4" across. Unwashed condition. Circa 1870; Pennsylvania origin. Measures 80" square.
Richly colored Amish One Patch quilt from Greene County, Pennsylvania. Seems to have been made by someone without tremendous financial resources but with a great color sense. Some of the blocks are pieced together with several pieces of the same materials. Front is wool; backing is cotton flannel. Measures 74" square; circa 1920.
Unusual hooked rug with two totally different textures. The interior striped portion is done in traditional hooking. The border is done by a technique known as prodding. The loose ends give a wonderful hairy effect. That, combined with the irregular coloration make a terrific contrast with the structured pattern of the striped center. New York State origin; circa 1920. Measures 39" x 40".
Pristine condition Tumbling Blocks Crib Quilt in a wonderful variety of late 19th century calico prints. Nice scale to the blocks. Border quilted with diagonal lines; quilting outlines the blocks of the body of the quilt. Unwashed condition. Measures 35" x 42". Oley, Pennsylvania origin; circa 1880.
Lovely version of Birds in the Air quilt done with small indigo calico and solid white triangles. The triple border is actually made of the same pieces but when arranged in another way, they have a totally different look. Pristine condition; professionally laundered. Very well quilted. Measures 64 " x 74''. New York State origin; circa 1870. Signed "Grace" in ink as seen in last thumbnail.
