Lancaster County Amish Bars Quilt: Circa 1920
This Lancaster County Amish Bars Quilt is both classic and quirky. The absence of an inner border gives a very different look to what would otherwise be a traditional pattern. It is deep red and dark forest green with lighter blue corner blocks. It is not as dark as appears in the overall photo. The Bars are quilted in double diamond patterns. The border is a combination of feathered wreaths and tulips. The front is wool; the back is tobacco colored cotton that may be home dyed. The border is black cotton sateen. In my experience, I have seen other slightly non-traditional Amish quilts that were made in the southern part of Lancaster County. Condition is very good. There are two small weak areas (about than the size of a pea) in the corner blocks but everything else is strong. Measures 75" square; circa 1920.
