| Exceptional applique quilt that qualifies as "Dutchy" in several ways. The fabrics, particularly the use of a printed ground, are typical of the Pennsylvania Germans. The red applique pattern is very reminiscent of the Pennsylvania German scherenschnittes (paper cut outs) for which they are well known. Use of the zigzag border and pieced Bars pattern for the backing are also features typical of Pennsylvania German quilts. Well designed in that the blocks more than alternate: the center block is different from all of the others. Unwashed condition. Measures 94" square; circa 1880. | |||||||||||
