A detailed and historical, 19th century, school "Certificate of Distinction" from the "Albemarle Female Institute of Charlottesville, Virginia! Text indicates that the certificate was awarded to Emma Shannon on June 12, 1885 (Or 1883--difficult to read as the date is partially concealed under the frame edge). The certificate recognizes that Emma excelled in Latin, Arithmetic, History of France, Rhetoric, and English Literature. Signed by W. P. Dickinson, President of the Faculty. With the exception of early fold lines, a water stain in the upper left corner, and two small circular age stains on the lower left and within the word "distinction", condition is quite nice! Measures 16.25 inches X 12.25 inches framed. The piece is framed in wood and is grain-painted in brown and black tones with cream-toned, chip-carved stems and leaves at each of the four corners. Original wood backing remains in place.

Measuring 8 3/4 inches long x 2 1/2 inches wide x 1 3/4 high, this charming wooden pencil box remains in pristine condition despite the fact that it dates to pre-WWII Germany! (Marked "Made in Germany" on cover, lower right side of design) To set it apart from other vintage pencil boxes, this one contains a surprise when the lid is opened-- a diminutive working abacus!! Very, very unusual!! To add to its charm, the pencil box cover bears a sweet early stencil of Snow White + the Seven Dwarfs! The scene depicts 5 of the dwarfs as well as Prince Charming, sadly escorting Snow White who is lying in her clear glass coffin, having already bitten into the evil witch's poisonous apple and fallen into a deep sleep. Apparently, Prince Charming does not yet realize that all it will take to wake Snow White is a kiss on the lips from him! The pencil box retains its original hinges and latch and remains in wonderful condition albeit for the signature of a former owner written in black ink in the interior "Susan Smith".

Offered is an EXCEEDINGLY RARE, 19th century, oval, bent-wood oak-framed, child's school slate. This wonderful, double-sided slate measures 10.25 inches x 14.25 inches and is in fine condition. This type of slate was also made in a smaller size, but either size is very, very seldom found today as the majority of 19th century school slates that were produced were rectangular in shape! Close-up photos show the interesting wood frame seam as well as the hanging hole. Flecks of paint are evident here and there and are most concentrated in one corner on one side of the slate as shown in photos. This rare oval slate is truly a must-have for any serious collector of early school memorabilia!
