This is an extremely rare Qianlong mark and period (AD 1735 - 1796) imperial underglaze blue and yellow enamelled dragon dish. It was skilfully reverse-decorated with three dragons chasing flaming pearls amidst ruyi clouds in overglaze yellow on an underglaze blue ground on the front and two dragons further on the back. The bottom was marked with the six character imperial Qianlong mark in seal script in underglaze blue. Dating: Qianlong mark and period (AD 1735 - 1796); Diameter of mouth: 25.1 cm; height: 4.4 cm; diameter of foot: 16.2 cm; Condition report: Generally good condition. The biscuit is intact. There is only one minute flea bite on the glaze on the rim. Part of the yellow enamel in the central dragon on the front and the two dragons on the back flaked off due to wear and tear for more than 200 years and was professionally restored. The percentage of yellow enamel restoration in the central dragon is about 15% and the two dragons on the back are both about 60%. However, they are restored so well that the restoration is not noticeable as shown in the enlargements. There are no other damages and restorations. It is in generally good condition. It should be considered a rare and important item. Few Qianlong blue and yellow enamelled dragon dish appear to be recorded at auctions and collections around the world. Some later (Daoguang and Guangxu etc.) examples however appeared in major auctions around the world in recent years. Additional photos showing enamel restorations are available on request.
