| This extremely rare and important Choson dynasty, 15th or 16th century, probably imperial, pear-shaped vase is completely covered in a lustrous, pure black glaze of a colour that looks like the background colour of midnight sky. It was fired on stilts and kiln sand so that it can be completely covered in glaze. Its elegant shape and refined glaze and body suggest that it was most probably produced in the Kwangju imperial kilns during the early Choson period when black glazed wares were briefly produced for a while. After the early Choson period, the production of black glazed wares dwindled or even ceased. This type of ware is very rare and very few are extant. An identical vase shown in the last photo is in the Tokyo National Museum. This vase will probably be declared a Treasure as soon as it arrives in Korea. Further, it is in perfect condition. Date: Choson dynasty, 15th/16th century; Height: 9 1/8 inches; Condition: perfect though with insignificant surface wear. | |||||||||||||||
