Antique 19th century American Bowie Knife
A very unusual and rare antique 19th century American Bowie Knife. A long blade of characteristic Bowie type with a clip back towards the point, the forte is hand incised with two crossed arrows. The hilt with horn cross- guard, the grip of turned tapering circular section made from seven pieces of different colored horn, with a brass pommel and basal ferrule.
This is a completely hand made knife in the fashion of the standard manufacture made Bowie knives. Please note that the round horn grip and the brass pommel are completely hand made with an an irregular gruff imitating a spindle turning left by a lathe. The blade is hand forged with arrow markings that are more like the native style. In our opinion this knife was made by Native Indians or by Confederates.
Crossed Arrows are a Native American Symbol of Friendship, so the knife was given by someone as a symbol of friendship, or belonged to an Indian scout and represented the Indian friendship with the army.
MEASUREMENTS: Overall length: 39 cm (15 3/8 in), length of the blade: 27 cm (10 5/9 in).
CONDITION: The Bowie is in good condition considering its age with minor wear, showing the age and usage patina.
