Rare antique 19th century portrait of an African American Alfred Butler by Canadian painter JOSHUA JOSEPH BIEHN, Active 1891-1932. A very fine oil on panel, signed and dated "1899" upper right, in its period gilt frame with the label NACKENZIE & CO. MATTHEWS ART GALLERY .ESTB.1861 IMPORTESRS OF FINE PICTURES MANIFACTURES OF GOLD AND OTHER FRAMES 95 Young St.,Toronto .Phone Main 534 . No 4846. Sept 1915.
Note: Alfred Butler was born into slavery in Nashville, Tennessee. Assisted by the underground railroad, and Frederick Douglas, he escaped slavery and finally settled in Canada where he became a successful news vendor.
Canadian artist Joshua Biehn was actively painting from about 1891 to 1932. He worked in Toronto, doing both oil and watercolour depictions of everyday street life. Children, street vendors and shoeshine boys were his favourite subjects.
Biehn's works are scarce, since very few hit the open market each year.
MEASUREMENTS: Dimensions with the frame: 30.5 cm x 30 cm (12 in x 11 7/8 in). Dimensions without the frame: 14.2 cm x 14.2 cm (5 5/8 in x 5 5/8 in).
CONDITION: Original and very good condition, no repairs or restorations whatsoever, some scratches and nicks to the frame.
