Antique 17th century Polish Hungarian Hussar Sword
Antique 17th century Polish - Hungarian Hussar sword, with a steel hilt in a typical Polish-Hungarian hussar form, with an open knuckle-guard, downcurving rear quillon, with bud-shaped terminals, and a characteristic cap pommel, extending over a black painted plain wooden grip. A sturdy slightly curved single edged plain blade, in its original leather covered metal scabbard, with three large steel mounts. The distinguishing style of the hilt is characteristic for 17th- 18th century Polish and Hungarian sabers, and it is very difficult to determine if the sword is Hungarian or Polish, as Hungary and Poland were neighbouring countries and some of the swords were made and used by both countries during the 17th -18th century. In this circumstance, references and dedicated literature, describe such swords under the terminology, Hungarian-Polish Saber.
A sword with a similar open hilt with bud-shaped terminals, and a plain blade as this particular example, was excavated from the Beresteczko (Berestechko) 1651 battlefield, and is published in the Polish Army Museum book volume 5 page 96, in the chapter written by Igor Swiesznikow.
CONDITION: In good condition overall, with minor wear, the original leather on the scabbard is dry and cracked.
MEASUREMENTS: Overall length in the scabbard: 85.8 cm (33 3/4 in).
