Antique 18th – 19th century silver mounted Tibetan short sword with a straight single edged sturdy iron blade, with a scabbard finely decorated with silver panels repousse, and chased with dragons in pursuit of flaming jewels, inset with turquoises and coral. The reverse silver panel is decorated with 8 Auspicious Symbols amongst floral scrollwork, within bevel iron mounts damascened with scrollwork, with a silver locket decorated with a kirtimukha mask, fitted on the back with a belt loop for suspension. The silver hilt is incised with scrolling foliage, with a pommel inset with coral, with small suspensions rings on the back, and a grip bound with brass wire.
REFERENCES: Two almost alike Tibetan Swords are published in the Christies’s catalogue: Indian and Southeast Asian Art New York 22 March 2000 lot 111, at a price of $ 6,000-8,000.
