Antique 19th century Islamic North African dagger with a slightly curved single – edged steel blade, incised with Arabic inscription. The hilt is in a typical North African fashion, with bone grips-scales retained by two brass rivets, with a black horn cross-guard, and pommel in the shape of elephant trunks, with notched ornament. In its original wooden scabbard, encased in brass, embossed in tribal design. The motif of the elephant trunks on the hilt are a long tradition in Moorish art, and can be traced to Medieval Islamic Moorish El Andalous Spain, when the quillons of the swords and daggers were in the shape of elephant trunks .
MEASUREMENTS: Overall length in the scabbard: 36 cm (14 1/8 in).
CONDITION: A crack in one of the bone grips-scales, the tip of the scabbard is plugged, so the blade does not go through to the end.
