Antique Oceanic late 19th – early 20th century Lime Container (Bandi Na Iavo), Middle Sepik,Papua-New Guinea, Iatmul, or Chambri People.
DETAILS: A wooden finial elaborately carved in the form of an ancestor, with eyes inlaid with shells, surmounted by a large bird figure, painted in white, black, and red, mounted on a hollowed out bamboo staff with cane bands. CONDITION: The beak of the bird is broken and glued in two spots, minor loss of paint, a small crack in the bamboo, visible in the photo, beautiful age patina. MEASUREMENTS: Overall length including the bamboo pole: 67.7 cm (26 5/8 in).Overall length of the wooden sculpture: 40.5 cm (16 in). REFERENCES: “OCEANIC ART” by A. Mayer, (p. 231, object # 246).
