SOLD Antique 18th century silver overlaid copper Islamic Indian Mughal - Huqqa pipe base of typical form, the bell-shape body with slightly flaring base decorated with finely engraved Arabic calligraphy, the upper and lower areas of which are framed by arabesque ornamentation.
The motifs are highly stylized, in accordance with Islamic tradition that prefers abstract or calligraphic floral themes to animal or human representations. The bell shape of the huqqa is the result of developments that took place around the 1730s and 1740s when this new shape superseded the spherical belly form that had previously been fashionable. The huqqa pipe is used for smoking tobacco, which was introduced to India in the late sixteenth century. Height: 18cm (7 inches) Diameter: 18.3cm (7 1/4 in) CONDITION: In very good condition with a lovely old patina and sign of usage. ALL ITEMS ARE GUARANTEED TO BE AUTHENTIC ANTIQUES, AND NOT REPRODUCTIONS.
ALL OUR ARTIFACTS ARE ACCOMPANIED BY A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY.
