 Rare Antique Jockey Horse Challenge Cup Trophy
Rare sterling silver gilt Challenge Cup, inscribed: “CHALLENGE CUP PRESENTED BY HIS EXCELLENCY The Lord Byng of Vimy G.C.B GAWERNOR GENERAL OF CANADA TO DORVAL JOCKEY CLUB 1922”. On the other side is beautifully engraved coat of arms .The trophy is English made and stamped with London marks: leopard’s head, lion passant, manufacture mark and date letter what correspond to 1904-5. Cup stands about 7 ½ inches tall and is about 9.5" across the handles and about 10 ¼ in diameter. Weight is about 745 grams. The cup is in good condition. Field Marshal, The Viscount Byng of Vimy Sir Julian Hedworth George Byng, Viscount Byng of Vimy Governor General: 1921 - 1926 Appointed: August 2, 1921 Sworn In: August 11, 1921, Quebec City, Quebec Born: September 11, 1862, Wrotham Park, England Died: June 6, 1935 Lord Byng in the First World War, commander of the Canadian Army Corps on the western front. He gained his glory with the Canadian victory at Vimy Ridge in April 1917 Serve in India and in South Africa during the war of 1899 - 1900. In First World War , Lord Byng campaigned in France as commander of the Cavalry Corps. By 1916, he was given the command of the Canadian Army Corps. Following the victory at Vimy Ridge, Lord Byng took command of the 3rd British Army he conducted the first surprise attack using tanks at Cambrai, Promoted to the rank of general, and after the war was raised to the peerage as 1st Baron Byng of Vimy of Thorpe-le-Soken, in Essex, on October 7, 1919.
