ISLAMIC FLAG FINIAL (ALUM), INDO PERSIA 19TH CENTURY
SOLD

Early 19th century Indo-Persian brass banner finial-Alum in shape of a hand engraved with calligraphic panel, mounted in cast-frame with dragon heads and riveted to the pole. Condition: in good condition except all parts are slightly loose at the rivets, nice age patina. Height: 12 ¾ inches (32,5 cm). The open hand according to Shi’ah tradition, represents the hand of Fatimah and the five fingers are signifying the family of the Prophet-Panjatan, the beloved five; Muhammad, Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Husain. The "Hand of Fatimah" is found throughout the Islamic world and is used as a protection from the Evil Eye. Sunnis often say that the open hand represents the five pillars of the faith. It is likely that this symbol originally also represented the White Hand which is often mentioned in the Qur’ans as one of the miraculous signs given to the prophet Moses.
