Antique Spanish Colonial Santos Virgin Mary, 18th cen.
Early 18th century Spanish Colonial carved wooden figure of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception with a silver crown. DETAILS: This fine wooden sculpture is covered in gesso and then polychrome. Such types of figures of the Virgin Mary were made during the 17th and 18th century period in the central and south Spanish America.
REFERENSES: Very similar wooden sculptures of the Virgin Mary are published in the Books:
1. “Cambios the Spirit of Transformation in Spanish Colonial Art Santa” Barbara Museum of Art by Gabriel Palmer and Donna Pierce Page 108 Fig 80A described as Mexico, early 18th century.
2. “Arte Barroca Mostra do Redescobrimento”( Baroque Art Rediscovery Exhibition0 page 141,142,143, described as 18th century.
CONDITION: Worn-out with loss of polychrome, beautiful and old, showing the aged patina, the silver crown was added later in the 19th century
MEASUREMENTS: Height including the crown: 31 cm (12 ¼ in) length: 11,5 cm (4 ½ in). Width: 6,5 cm (2 1/5 in).
