Antique 17th century superb Indo Persian sword-Talwar.
DETAILS: An Iron hilt of rare form comprised of a cross-guard formed with a pair of short quillons with swollen terminals and long langets, a knuckle bow terminating in a bird head and a grip with a pommel formed as an animal's head. A hilt decorated over its entire surface with gold koftgari foliage. A broad and very sharp curved single–edged blade with a wide and long fuller made of gorgeous Damascus steel. The saber is in its original wooden scabbard covered with black leather decorated with a tooled design of foliage.
CONDITION: The sword is in good condition considering its age with minor wear except for the scabbard which its leather is partly missing.
MEASUREMENTS: overall length with the scabbard: 92 cm (36 1/4inches), the length without scabbard: 91.5 cm (36 inches), length of the blade: 79.5cm (31 1/4inches).
REFERENCES: A similar sword hilt to this one is published in the book "Indian Arms and Armor” by Dr.G.N Pant, Volume II Plate CXX and described as 17th century from Gujarat.
