Antique Turkish Sword Yatagan, Ottoman, 18th -19th cen.

Antique 18th -19th century Turkish Ottoman Sword Yatagan with a characteristic ear shaped hilt. DETAILS: The hilt is made of two large pieces of walrus ivory mounted in silvered metal decorated in fine filigree bead work of open wire work with a typical Balkan raised knobbed design and applied with raised settings of fluted almond-shaped corals and two round red glass stones on the ricasso. A recurved single edged blade with a narrow fuller ornamented with silver in its original leather-bound wooden scabbard set with metal mounts.
REFERENCES: 1) Yanissari "History Symbols Weapons" by G.E.Vvedensky. 2) "Zbirka Jatagana" by Dora Boskovic. 3) "Les Armes Blanches du Monde Islamic" by Alain Jacob. 4) "The Janissaries" by David Nicolle. The Yatagan was the favourite sword of the Janissaries and was also very popular in many Balkan states and some Eastern European countries such as Ukraine and Hungary. Overall length: 75 cm (29 1/2 inches).
CONDITION: Cracks in the ivory hilt, the metal fittings of the hilt are worn out with signs of old repairs, silver inlaid ornament on the blade worn out.
MEASUREMENTS: The overall length with the scabbard: 75.5 cm (29 3/4 in).
