Antique Chinese late 18th century (Qing Dynasty) extremely well hand carved white stone sculpture of Guanyin mounted to an elegant rosewood stand. Kwan Yin is sited in dhyanasana on the throne and wearing elaborated loose-fitting robes and a Chinese –style head dress with cowl over the top-knot with mandorla. Guan Yin is the bodhisattva of compassion, revered by Buddhists as the Goddess of Mercy. Her name is short for Guan Shi Yin. Guan means to observe, watch or monitor; Shi means the world; Yin means sounds, specifically sounds of those who suffer. Thus, Guan Yin is a compassionate being who watches for, and responds to, the people in the world who cry out for help. MEASUREMENTS: Dimensions with the stand: Height: 33cm (13in). Width: 14cm (5 ˝ in) CONDITION: no cracks or repairs, except for a chip on the rim of the Mandorla and the right side rim of the throne which can be expected from an antique over 200 year old object.
