Antique Head Hunters Sword Jimpul Parang Dayak
Rare antique 19th century sword Jimpul of the famous Dayak headhunters from Borneo. DETAILS: A handle elaborately carved from a polished deer antler showing age and usage patina with a hand forged (visible welded-pattern) sturdy single edge curved blade widening towards the end, cut on both sides with fullers, the lower part of the blade along the back edge is pierced and engraved with scrollwork. Most of the head hunters Dayak swords seen on the market are Mandau Parang, this rare Dayak sword Jimpul seldom appears on the market. Both Jimpul and Mandau swords are from Kalimantan (Borneo) and both are associated with the head hunting tradition of the Dayak, however the Jampul is a favored sword of the Kenyah known as Sea Dayak and famous as the sinister pirates.
CONDITION: The blade is lightly pitted overall, with minor wear; the bone handle is chipped with one age crack.
MEASUREMENTS: Overall length: 71 cm (28 in).
REFERENCES: Traditional Weapons of the Indonesian Archipelago: Albert G. Van Zonneveld.
