Carl Oscar Borg was considered "a major American artist," though he was born in Grinstad, Sweden on March 3, 1879. Borg worked as a seaman and studied art in London before emigrating to New York City in 1902. He moved to California in 1903 and through the patronage of Mrs. Phoebe Hearst, was able to return to Europe for further study in Paris and Rome. Upon his return he taught at the California Art Institute in Los Angeles, and from 1918 to 1924 lived in Santa Barbara where he taught at the School of Arts. The interval years 1924 to 1935 were spent traveling to San Francisco, Los Angeles and the Grand Canyon. The subjects of his paintings included Hopi and Navajo Indians, cowboys, historical scenes, and California landscapes, seascapes and missions. He made three trips to Sweden in the 1930s, and when war broke out in Europe he was forced to remain there for the duration of the war. While in Sweden he had considerable fame and financial success in selling his paintings of Indians and desert scenes to art collectors. After World War II ended, he returned to Santa Barbara where he died on May 8, 1947. Awards:

Born in East Hartford, Connecticut, Henry Ahl was a portraitist, muralist and landscape painter whose work reflected his exposure to the Tonalist style of the Barbizon painters. He studied at the Royal Academy of Munich with Alexander Wagner and Franz Von Stuck, and in Paris with Jean Leon Gerome. He exhibited with the Munich Royal Academy. Image 25"L x 30"W. Biography, Born in Boston in 1854, the son of Daniel Sargent Curtis and Ariana Wormeley Randolf Curtis. Educated at Harvard College where he and a friend were cofounders of the "Lampoon". Curtis owed his artistic start to his parents who bought the Palazzo Barbaro on the Grand Canal, Venice. This soon became a meeting place for English and American artists including Henry James and Isabella Stewart Gardener. After graduation Curtis went to Europe to join his family and eventually took up residence in Paris, where he studied at the Academe Julian under Gustave Boulanger and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre. Curtis became close friends with his distant cousin John Singer Sargent.
Much like Sargent he documented the attractive scenes of modern day life that could be found all around him in Venice. He was a master of the effects of light on water, much like his French counterparts and had an illustrator's accuracy for draftsmanship, honed by Parisian training. He was known for landscapes, portraits [famous people], Venice, interiors, rivers, cities and coast.In 1880 Curtis and Sargent went to Holland to paint together after which Curtis returned to his parents home, the Palazzo Barbaro in Venice, the crossroads of art and society.He won honorable mention in the 1889 Expo. Curtis remained abroad after completing his training in Paris, spending his summers in Venice. He died in 1922.

A resident and distinguished impressionist painter of both the East and West Coasts, Colin Campbell Cooper earned an international reputation with his depictions of landscapes, florals, portraits, gardens, interiors and figures. He was especially noted for street scenes and skyscrapers of New York and Philadelphia, and his impressionist palette was inspired by Childe Hassam, whom he met in New York beginning in the 1890s.
In the later part of his life, he focused on West Coast subject matter and espoused "The California Style" of watercolor painting, a bold, aggressive new oil-painting look to a medium that had traditionally been used more modestly.
He was born in Philadelphia to an upper class family where the father was a surgeon, and he, the son, was encouraged by his educated family to pursue art. He was also inspired by the art he saw at the 1876 Philadelphia Exposition. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Thomas Eakins and in Paris at the Academies Julian, Vitti, and Delecluse. During that time, he traveled throughout Europe and painted picturesque architectural scenes, which gained him widespread recognition. Sadly many of these paintings were lost in a fire of 1896.
From 1895 to 1898, he was instructor of watercolor at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia and then moved to New York City from where he and his artist wife, Emma Lampert, traveled throughout the world in search of subject matter.
They first went to California in 1915, spending the winter in Los Angeles and in 1921, settled in Santa Barbara, where he served as Dean of Painting at the Santa Barbara Community School of Arts.
He was a member of numerous associations including the California Art Club, Salmagundi Club, and the National Academy of Design. His work is in many museums including the Cincinnati Art Museum, the St. Louis Museum, and the Oakland Museum.
Cooper died in Santa Barbara.
Edan Hughes, Artists in California, 1786-1940
Herman Rose Gansevoort st pier New York oil on canvas signed lower left measuring 10 3/8” x 20 3/4” in excellent condition.
Known for small scale, modernist urban views of New York City, he depicted the city as a jumble of architecture in varying sombre colors in a mood reminiscent of 19th century Romanticism. He had a highly original technique, which was covering a drawing with small dabs of paint and pushing spots of warm and cool color over one another, which dried into a kind of low relief.
It took him about a decade, from 1929 to 1939, to arrive at this style and method that seemed right for him. He decided to paint what he saw without consciousness as to style or composition and with spiritual commitment, devoting himself to divinity in nature, separated from the modern world.
By the 1960s, he was doing horizontal work in brighter hues that gave the viewer the impression of being swept along a street or urban path.
A fine original Early California Landscape By Carl Jonnevold oil on canvas signed lower right in original frame and in excellent condition measuring approx. 12 x 16
Landscape painter. Born in Norway on June 1, 1856. Jonnevold came to the U.S. in the 1880s and is known to have painted in the Northwest before moving to California in 1887. Settling in San Francisco, he maintained a studio at 1617 California Street. He was a self-taught painter except for brief study in the galleries of Paris in 1908. While in France, he was influenced by the Barbizon painters and their dark palette. Returning to California, he continued to paint the beauty of northern California in the Barbizon style. Often working in late afternoon when shadow prevails, he produced hundreds of attractive tree and meadow scenes which he exhibited in local galleries. By the time of the stock market crash in 1929, Jonnevold was poverty stricken and living alone at his small studio at 560 Kearny Street. In that year he was sentenced to two months in jail for aiming a gun at his landlord. Jonnevold disappeared from San Francisco about 1930. A letter at the Oakland Museum gives his date of death as June 9, 1955 but no location. His works have gained renewed respect in recent years and are highly sought after by collectors.

William Keith rivalled Thomas Hill as the most accomplished and successful landscape painter working in California during the 19th century. After two years spent studying art in Düsseldorf, Paris and Boston, Keith returned to California in 1872 as a sophisticated painter whose work drew on several prevailing styles popular in the cultural centers of the world. Many of his paintings reflect the influence of the "Hudson River School" and depict sublime mountain scenery à la Church or Bierstadt.
But at the same time as he was painting alpine panoramas, Keith also focused on the more intimate landscapes of the French Barbizon movement that had come to the forefront of Parisian art appreciation during the 1860s. Barbizon painters adopted a more natural and impressionistic style than that of the academic painters; their works often communicate a rougher and stronger presence of nature than sweeter, more sentimental academic landscapes. Major works of the English painter John Constable, exhibited at Paris Salons of the 1820s, influenced the Barbizon painters in the direction of this stronger style. Original antique watercolor landscape cattle in a landscape signed lower right Kruseman van Elten. Measuring 11 X 17 double matted overall 16.5 x 22.5 inches. In very good antique condition light fading.
Born in Alkmaar, Holland, Hendrik Kruseman van Elten was a landscape painter who lived primarily in New York City and came to the United States. As a young man he studied landscape painting in Haarlem with Cornelis Lieste, then traveled in Holland, Germany, France and Belgium before coming to the United States in 1865.
Kruseman van Elten's meticulously rendered paintings were exhibited from 1866 until 1900 at the National Academy of Design. He was named an Associate at the institution in 1871 and an Academician in 1883. Many of his subjects are scenes in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York, where he kept a summer home in the Catskill artists' colony at Ellenville. A painting "View of the Rocky Mountains" was dated 1884, and in 1898, he exhibited work at the Denver Artists Club.
He began printmaking in 1876; his work in the etching medium ranks among the best produced anywhere. He was an important member of the Society of Painter-Etchers in London. Several hundred of his paintings were auctioned at the American Art Guild in New York in 1905.

Dupre (1811-1889), French painter, was one of the chief members of the Barbizon school of landscape painters. Dupré's color is sonorous and resonant; the subjects for which he showed marked preference are dramatic sunset effects and stormy skies and seas. Among his chief works are the Morning and Evening at the Louvre, and the early Crossing the Bridge in the Wallace Collection.
