| A masterpiece of Mexican Silverplate, a Table Ornament in the form of a Gong, the frame a continuous display of fantastic stylized Fish, Birds, Snakes and at the top and base, fierce Aztec Warrior faces, both sides decorated the same, with high relief figures. The base is stepped with geometric designs, stylized figures and holds two figural Birds which serve as the resting place for, I assume, a small mallet with which to use the gong. The age is most likely the late 30's to early 1940's . CONDITION: The circular gong is Silverplated Brass, for sound purposes I am certain. There are numerous dents in the Silverplated round Gong piece and the edge does have bends, appears to have been used...also the hangers for this piece were gone when purchased from the Estate, the ones that you see are temporary and are a heavy silvertone wire. There is no Mallet for the gong. Missing at purchase. There are some edge scratches and the surface finishing is quite primitive, not perfect. The frame is cast and does have a seam. The thick plated surface tests as 900-925 Silver. The hardware, nuts and threaded rods, which hold the two birds and the frame to the base is steel. It is unmarked. SIZE: 8-1/4" ht. x 7-1/2" wide x 1/4" thick. Weight is 3 lbs. for the object alone. Looked at by Butterfield & Butterfield (now Bonham & Butterfield) in 1993 and identfied as " A Mexican Silver Table Gong" by their staff. No monetary appraisal given. A great and interesting addition to a vintage Mexican Arts Collection. | |||||||||||||||
