A large Chinese silk satin picture painted and finely embroidered with silk thread, in traditional taste, depicting two figures (probably Scholars) ascending a footpath to a Pavillion shaded by Pine trees in a mountain landscape. The embroidered calligraphy to the top right takes the form of a poem which can be translated as:
"Spring water flows loudly and clearly . . dusk is coming. Climbing the steps and looking at the scene in conversation and laughter. Thanks to the sparse cover of pine trees we can walk through the moonlight. In the quiet of the Mountain Pavillion flying Cranes can be observed from afar."
This item was probably made in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, Eastern China during either the Republic period (1911-1949) or during the 1950s in the early years of the Peoples Republic.
Condition: very good - there are old creases to the silk satin fabric but no damages, losses, repairs or alterations.
A rare "famille rose" dragon and phoenix decorated bowl with an inscription dedicating it as a 60th birthday gift from Ma Tao Yu to Xiong Gong - otherwise known as Chen Zhao Ying (1888-1977), who was a senior military leader of the Guo Min-dang (Kuomintang) between the years 1911 to 1932 and who was very close to Sun Zhong-shan and Jiǎng Jièshí (Chiang Kai-shek). From 1944 to 1948, Chen Zhao Ying was the chief of the Jiangxi Province Guo Min-dang Party committee and the minister of Audit for Anhui and Jiangxi Provinces. The bowl, dedicated as an advance birthday gift, is dated Autumn, 1946.
Condition - excellent - no damages and no restoration.

An extremely finely and delicately painted eggshell porcelain bowl by Wang Yijun. The poem on the reverse side reads "Wen ji qi wu xiang feng nian, fu gui rong hua ren ping an. Wang Yijun zuo" which can translate as "Practice the sword while hearing roosters (meaning work hard) and enjoy the affluence of the year; wish people wealth, prosperity and safety. Made by Wang Yijun"The seal mark to the base reads "Jingdezhen Zuo" - Made in Jingdezhen. Wang Yijun (1904 - 1989)was born in Anhui, China. A student of Wu Ai in his early years, he specialised in “flowers and birds” painting. He adapted Lang Shining’s style, with a touch of traditional famille rose technique. His works are usually delicate and vivid, with the elegance of the court school. In 1959 Wang Yijun was conferred the title “Ceramic Artist” by the Jingdezhen Munipal Government. In 2011, the late artist was given the Official award of “China’s Master of Ceramic Art”. A "mirror" pair of European subject vases hand painted with 'Famille Rose' enamels in 18th century style. The bases are painted with the overglaze blue enamel four character reign mark of the Yongzheng emperor (1723-1735) but these vases were made later, in the 20th Century, during the Republic period (1911-1949).
Condition: excellent - no damages and no restoration.

A finely crafted pumpkin shaped Zisha clay Yixing stoneware teapot decorated on one side with applied pumpkin vine decoration. This item carries three seal marks which all bear the name Shi Yu Zhen.

A finely carved pair of Buffalo, each mounted by a small boy. These items were made in China in the first half of the 20th Century, during the Republic period (1911-1949 or earlier.

A 'bronze' (copper zinc alloy) hand warmer decorated, we think, with scenes from the "Xi Xiang Ji" - a Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) story known in the west as "The Romance of the Western Chamber ". The pierced cover depicts two dragons amongst stylized clouds in pursuit of a pearl. On the base is the six character reign mark of the Ming dynasty Xuande emperor (1426-1435) but this item was made later, probably in the 20th Century, during the Republic period (1911-1949).
Condition : excellent - no damages and no repairs.

A rare carved hardwood plaque depicting a heavily tattooed Maori figure with top-knot and holding a Mere (traditional short club); the eyes are inset with Paua (abalone) shells.
This item was acquired with the large mask (item #201 in our catalogue) and is signed with the same initials.
Condition: very good - the left toe of the left foot is missing; no other damages and no repairs.

An "ogee" shaped porcelain bowl decorated with polychrome 'famille rose' enamels depicting two pheasants amongst flowering peony and pomegranate branches and below a band of alternating lotus flowers and the eight Buddhist emblems, the Bajixiang. The seal mark to the base reads "Zhong Hua Min Guo" (Republic of China), dating it to the period 1911-1949.
Condition: there are rim frits / chips and there is a light 1cm hairline to the rim ; no further damages and no restoration.

A painted figure of a West African musician playing a large antelope horn Oliphant. This item was made of cast aluminium using the "lost wax" process, probably in Ghana (possibly Nigeria) during the first half of the 20th Century..
Condition; there is surface degradation of the metal and most of the paint is missing.

A carved wood figure of a barefoot fisherman with straw hat and his hair in a top knot, carrying a basket and net. This item was made in China circa 1920-1960 during either the Republic or very early People's Republic periods.
Condition: very good - there is an old crack next to his right foot; no further damages and no repairs or restoration. 20cm (8inches) high.
An early 20th Century Zisha ("purple clay") teapot with famille rose enamelled decoration depicting the "Three Friends of Winter" - prunus (plumb) blossom, pine tree and bamboo - and also a single bat. This item was made in Yixing, Zhejiang province, China during the Republic period (1911-1949). The maker's or shop seal mark inside the cover reads "Rong Ji"; the elaborate seal mark on the base reads "Fu Kang Ying Kou". Ying Kou is a town in Liao Ning province, north east China. Condition: very good - there are no damages other than a minute chip to the cover (please view enlargement 7) . There has been no restoration. 16.5cm (6.5inches) long; 9cm (3.5inches) high. A rare carved Sepik River Mask decorated with mud embedded cowrie shells and human hair. This item is 'old' by Papua New Guinea standards having been made pre 1970.
Condition: there are losses to the applied decoration (some having been re-glued) and one of the boar's tusks is missing from the nose.

A large and heavy carved hardwood mask, inset with Paua shell eyebrows, eyes and teeth, depicting tu-mata-uenga - the Maori god of war.

A Central American carved wood coffee table with glass cover decorated in pre-Columbian Mayan style and made in Honduras circa 1955-1965.

A large underglaze blue decorated vase, very finely painted in 18th Century style with bands of plantain leaves, key fret and ruyi above the Bajixiang (eight Buddhist emblems) amongst cloud scrolls. On the base is the six character seal mark of the Qianlong emperor (1736-1795) but this item was made later, in the 20th Century, probably during the Republic period (1911-1949). Condition - a section of the body has been broken and was professionally repaired about 30 years ago (please view enlargements 7 and 8) and there are two drill holes to the base where we have had the vase tested. 38cm (15inches) high. A porcelain vase hand painted in traditional Chinese style with a continuous mountain and river landscape and accompanying poem. This item was probably made, circa 1950-1975, during the third quarter of the 20th Century.
Condition: the base has been drilled for a lamp conversion; no further damages and no restoration.

A rare Mahogany table with deeply carved traditional West African style geometric decoration and with elegant stylized antelope form legs.
The European shape and African decoration suggests that this item was made for European clients during the Colonial period, is probably Igbo from eastern Nigeria, and was possibly exported to the UK in the 1950s or 1960s during the period of transition to Independence.
Condition: very good - no damages or repairs.
