Chinese Coconut Cup with Poem Republic Period 1911-1949
A flower shaped coconut cup with finely incised (malachite? inlaid) calligraphic inscription which can be translated as: "Then (I) did not climb up to Mei Guan, but just said there were always prunus blossoms there: Today (I) passed the Mei Guan and smiled (illusion?): all over the mountain there are only thorns and wild flowers." This is quoted from the poem "Passing the Mei Guan" by Zhuang Qiuwen. At the end it is inscribed "a present to Dr Ye Feili from Zhang Shulian". This item was possibly made in China in the 1920s or 1930s during the Republic period (1911-1949) - for a similarly decorated coconut bowl please view stock number 648 in our catalogue. Condition - the top of one petal is missing and there are two "hairline" cracks (please view enlargements). 8.2cm (3.25inches) high.
