| A carved schist panel showing a seated meditating Buddha or Jain surrounded by 12 disciples and a Nandi. Having showed this plaque to several experts in S- and SE-Asian art have not given me any clear interpretation of the center figure which can be Jain or Buddhist. However it is clear that the plaque is very old and dates back to 2-4th century AD Bihar area NE-India. The central naked figure is seated in meditating posture on a single lotus base and has a halo behind his face and above the head is a sort of shadowing "parasol". The face is serene with a dominant nose, a mouth with broad lips and almond-shaped incised eyes with arched eyebrows, in the forehead a third eye is seen. The hair-dress is round and shows curls, ears are big and shoulder touching. The torso is thin waisted musculus and broad-shouldered. Below the central figure is a recumbent Nandi, under which 2 disciples are seated in meditating posture with same hair-dress as the central figure. Side panels have 10 disciples, upper left and right disciples are seated in a squatting position holding garlands, the other 8 figures are seated in lotus position with hands in worshipping posture all figures have a curly hair-dress that is shoulder touching. Small damage on lower right of panel and a dent on central lower base. H: 39 cm, W: 23 cm, D: 2 cm. | |||||||||||||||
