Hanging Scroll of Landscape
52 X 19¼ inches
132.1 X 48.9 cm
Color on Paper
Inscribed and signed with three artist seals.
The painting depicts towering mountains and age-old pines of Sichuan, amid a sea of floating white clouds. The inscribed poem tells about the artist's feelings of getting too old to climb up high mountains and get a bird's eye view. As is known to experts, in 1959, Zhang Daqian lives in his Badeyan (Garden of Eight Virtues) of Brazil. Since he could not possibly return to Sichuan of southeastern China, the artist would paint about mountainous scenery of his homeland, which frequently appears his dreams.
Zhang Daqian is considered one of the most celebrated Chinese artists of our time, esp. on figure, landscape and Buddhist painting art. This painting is from a New York family collection. It is both rare and imposing.
