ROYAL BAKUBA RED NTSHAKAKOT

Bakuba Peoples, Congo. This garment is a Royal Queen's overskirt - "Ntshakakot" - defined by the undulating edge, unique to the Bakuba; also unique is the manner of their rolling the Ntshakakot for storage - interleaving the ruffled edges (see Cornet or Mort, also image). With the center field ("Mboom") of embroidered abstract designwork that the Bakuba are noted for and seen in their voluminous "Ntshakiswepys" which this "Ntshakakot" covered, and an edging in patterned cut-pile work, this is a distinct textile form; its use though, was restricted to the highest ranking women at the Royal Court of the Bakuba. Measuring approximately 63" x 25 1/2" (160 x 65 cm.), this is a very rare textile.
