ROYAL BAKUBA NTSHAKABWIIN

Bakuba Peoples, Congo. This textile is a Royal woman's overskirt; "ntshak-" for a woman's garment, and in this example, a center field (the "Mboom") of cut-pile work in red. The border exhibits the 'Richileu' embroidery the Bakuba are noted for; a noted aspect of Ntshakabwiin skirts such as this one. Measuring approximately 65" x 23 1/2" (165 x 60 cm.), this Ntshakabwiin has some losses and could be cleaned - but how this must have been danced in, and proudly!
