| Bakuba Peoples, Congo. This rare textile is actually a little boy's skirt; among the Bakuba, both men and women wear these wrap-around garments, known as "Mapel" when male garments, and "Ntshak" denotes female. There are definite characteristics that differentiate between the two, among which are the distinct raffia 'pom-pons' or balls, which decorate the border; a male characteristic, this. Measuring 44" x 17 1/2" (114 x 44.5 cm.), this antique garment shows much wear and use - and shows repeated repairs, performed lovingly, no doubt. | ||
