| Bakuba Peoples, Congo; this is a Rare Old Noblewoman's skirt, worn at Court, celebrations and festivals, and worn only by these "kolm" or titleholders. There are some 130 named "kolm" at the Bakuba court, and women number among them of course. Measuring an impressive thirteen and one-half feet in length (13' 6 1/2" - 413 cm.), this has been hand-woven from raffia palm fiber (raffia viniferis), the most difficult of all natural fibers to work with; interestingly, among the Bakuba, it is the men who do the weaving, and the women, the embroidery. This ntshakiswepy, one of some four or five that we have, is in need of some cleaning and conservation - but once danced proudly! | ||
