BAKUBA KUBA ROYAL BUSHONGO NTSHAKABWIIN

Bakuba (Kuba) Peoples, Congo. This object was reserved for wear only by the highest ranking women at the Royal Court of the Kuba. An overskirt - worn over the voluminous ntshakiswepy - this is a complete textile, as the border was never seen. Constructed of hand woven raffia fiber (raffia viniferis), both the border and the field in this example are done in finely sewn 'Richileu' embroidery - a hallmark of Bushongo work, and their most revered (the Bushongo are the central, and ruling, tribe among the Kuba). Measuring approximately four feet (48" - 122 cm.) x 21" (53 cm.), this is an older textile - we feel probably mid-twentieth century, circa 1950's, perhaps earlier - and the condition is very good. Royal. Rare.
