RARE BA KUBA ROYAL BEADED CROWN - MPAAN

Ba Kuba peoples, Congo, early-mid twentieth century; a Very Rare Ba Kuba Royal Beaded Crown, 'Mpaan'; consisting of a raffia (raffia vineferis) based foundation with 'Dutch Tile trade beads' ("diish" or "miish"), with highly-prized cowrie shells ("lapash"). This construction, with the 'ear flaps', is reserved only for Royalty. Measuring approximately 9" x 9" x 9" (23 cm. x 23 cm. x 23 cm.), and mounted on custom stand, there are some losses, as evident, but easily restored. Very Rare.
