Beautiful Japanese work of art, Katazome (stencil dye with natural blue dye) on thick, lightweight, coarsely woven cotton.. It is decorated with auspicious motives; crane and long-tailed turtle in the frame work of sho-chiku-bai (pine, bamboo, plum blossoms), another symbols of happiness. Bamboo canes and pines are hidden, actually all over here in the form of scrolls. Three rolls of 13.5" (width) x 130" (length) thick cotton are partially hand sewn together. The condition is excellent with little color loss, very little holes or stains.
This type of fabrics were very popular during the Meiji to Taisho period. They were made into a set of bridal futon comforters. We are not sure how this panel was used; it was never cut to the size (very long) and there is no folding line in the center length. Approx. total dimensions: 1.1 yd x 3 yd (1m x 3.25m)
