A "peacock-blue" glass bowl
19th century
Diameter: 5 in. (14.5 cm.)
Height: 4 1/8 in. (10.5 cm.)

A "peacock-blue" glass cylindrical bowl with a tall flaring neck, the form reminiscent of the rhinoceros horn, the outside walls carved with two flying egrets, sprays of lotus and reeds, the foot formed by intertwined lotus pods.

The association of the egret and lotuses is a motif for passing the Civil Examinations. Flying egrets are also a way to wish a household success. See Bartholomew (2006), p. 91.
