Thailand, 19th century
Height: 31 inches
A tall figure of Buddha Shakyamuni standing with one leg in front of the other, wearing a light garment revealing one shoulder, the left hand in Vitarka mudra with the thumb and index finger forming a circle symbolizing the Wheel of Law, an invitation for discussion and intellectual argument, the right arm and hand extended straight down in Bhumisparsa mudra as if touching the ground, a gesture invoking the earth as witness to the truth of Buddha's words.
The right arm seems almost boneless, which is a typical feature used to depict Buddha in Thailand, mimicking the trump of the elephant, a sacred animal in Buddhism and symbol of the nation.
Condition: Very good
