A LARGE TURQUOISE BLUE GLASS CUP

Qing Dynasty (19th century)

The shape is reminiscent of a rhinoceros horn cup although the present example is perfectly cylindrical. The tall flared wall is deeply carved in relief on the outside with a continuous scene of a lotus pond and birds. The foot is formed by intertwined lotus pods.

Diam. 5 3/4 in. (14.5 cm.)

H. 3 7/8 in. (10 cm.)

Provenance: Sandford Gadient Collection

Literature: compare with a pair of bowls published in 'Elegance and Radiance: Grandeur in Qing Glass in the Andrew K. F. Lee Collection' (The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2000), p. 242, cat. no. 85. Although the bowls are not of the same shape, the carving style, subject and color are very similar.

Condition: excellent
