A fine Daoguang mark and period "Fruit" bowl
Enamels on porcelain

Daoguang period, 1820–1850
Diameter: 5 5/8 in (14.2 cm)
Height: 2 ½ in (6.4 cm)

A medium sized bowl with delicate “over-the-wall” decoration of fruiting branches of what is likely a persimmon tree. The persimmon fruit stands for “long life” and, coupled with the lingzhi also depicted at the base, reinforces the wishes for a long life. On the base can be seen the reign mark of the Daoguang emperor in iron red enamel.

For more on the symbolism of the persimmon see Wolfram Eberhard, A Dictionary of Chinese Symbols, English Edition (New York: 1988), pp.232-233.
