A baluster form bottle vase of transparent green glass
18th century
Height: 6 ¼ in (15.9 cm)

A baluster form bottle vase of transparent green glass over a very thin layer of white, each side with a white, amber and pink overlay carved in high relief with a peacock and blossoming peonies growing from rockwork, the shoulders with two mock-mask ring-handles, the foot resting on a pink stand carved with four ruyi-shaped bracket feet.

The association of a peacock and peonies means “May you gain culture, wealth and honor.” See Bartholomew (2006), 5.25.3. For a piece with similar characteristics and colors see, Brown (1995) cat. no. 75, and Spink & Son Ltd, Chinese Jewellery, Accessories and Glass (London: 11th – 24th December 1991), cat. no.100.

Published: Asiantiques, Chinese Qing Dynasty Glass Treasures: A Selection from the Gadient Collection (2009), cat. no. 27

(Hard cover catalogue, 64 glass artworks, 64 pp, full color illustrations, English text and Chinese captions. Catalogue available for purchase, $45 including domestic shipping, $55 international.
