A large opaque green glass bowl with boys playing
18th century
Height: 3 3/8 in (8.6 cm)
Diameter: 7 1/8 in (18.1 cm)

A large opaque green glass bowl resting on a small ring foot, the flared walls decorated with boys at play in gold and silver applied to a red lacquer ground and with details in black lacquer.

“Boys at play” was a popular subject in Chinese art during the Ming and Qing dynasty. This design is associated with the wish for many sons, “who will pass the civil examinations with high honors.” See Bartholomew (2006), 3.4.
