Good Pair of Hand-Colored Steel Engravings Circa 1843
From our Chinese Polychrome Collection, a good pair of hand-colored steel engravings circa 1843, drawn by Thomas Allom and engraved by W. Wetherhead and W.H. Capone. The first engraving is titled "Sowing Rice at Soo-Chow-Foo," and the second piece is titled "Temple of Buddha, Canton" both of which hail from the famous four volume 1840's series called "China Illustrated."

Thomas Allom (1804-1872) was a notable architect and topographical illustrator active during the mid-19th century, and was one of the founding members of the Royal Institute of British Architects. His extensive travels were the source material for his prolific career as an artist/illustrator, and scores of his drawings were engraved and incorporated into travel books all across Europe.

Size and Condition: Both pieces have an image size of 7 1/2 inches in width, 5 inches in height. The images themselves are perfect; there is some random light soiling to the border areas and tape residue on the back apparently from a previous mounting.

(Please note that due to the modest price point for this listing, we cannot include it in our special giveaway for free reference books, sorry.)
