From our Southeast Asia Collection, a fine and rare Burmese dry lacquer Buddha, 19th century or earlier, exquisitely modeled with a beautifully serene meditative visage that is quintessentially Shan Burmese in form, featuring a broad sweeping forehead framed by a glass mosaic adorned fillet band, high-set eyebrows, a sharply linear nose with flared nostrils, a small mouth with thin lips gently curved upward into a half smile, three neck creases, and characteristically elongated earlobes that extend to touch the shoulders. This extremely fine Buddha is seated in padmasana position with his right hand in bhumisparsa mudra, elevated upon a two-tiered / waisted base. Beaded lacquer curls rise up to form the ushnisha at the top of the Buddha's head, which is further surmounted by a removable gilded teak finial. Other light traces of gilding remain throughout.

Size and Condition: 30 inches tall, 16 inches wide, 10 inches deep. Excellent condition overall. There is some random minor flaking to the lacquer in a few places, but really quite minor and commensurate with age and nature of the material.
